Protein powders can be a very simple way to get a lot of protein in without having to actually chew anything. However, a lot of the protein powders out there are expensive, contain ingredients that many people are sensitive to, and are filled with additives and artificial sweeteners. Also, if you’re Paleo and don’t drink dairy (whey), don’t eat legumes (pea protein), don’t eat any grains (rice), and aren’t a fan of hemp, then you’re pretty limited on choices (pumpkin seed protein powder is what you’ve got left, and I do have an excellent smoothie that utilizes that here). I’ve solved all of those predicaments by creating a smoothie that contains NO protein powder. My creamy coconut sweet potato smoothie recipe is not only delicious and nutritious, it’s also super filling.
Although my creamy coconut sweet potato smoothie recipe is not as high in protein as many of the smoothies with protein powder, it is a powerhouse of nutrition, completely Paleo and, have a I mentioned, extremely tasty?! Pair it with a couple of pieces of bacon, a sausage patty, or scrambled eggs to make a high in protein and scrumptious breakfast.
After you taste this creamy smoothie, you’ll wonder why you never thought to add sweet potato to your morning smoothies before!
One of my secret ingredients, that make this smoothie both filling and nutritious is the use of gelatin. Gelatin can often come through with an unpleasant texture in a smoothie. I’ve solved that problem for you too! You’ll find a separate recipe for the Gelatin Ice Cubes below.

Packed with Vitamin A, C, potassium, selenium and protein, this gorgeous golden orange smoothie is the perfect way to start your day!
Ingredients
1 small sweet potato, cooked and peeled
¼ cup canned coconut milk, full fat (This is one of my favorite brands)
2 egg yolks
3-5 gelatin ice cubes
½ small organic orange, washed with peel left on (remove peel if using a regular blender)
½ frozen banana
¼ tsp green stevia (here's the brand I recommend)
1 cup ice

Instructions
Add all ingredients to a high powered blender such as a Vitamix, or Ninja. You may also use a Nutribullet, however you'll likely need to halve the ingredients.

One of the reasons why I make the gelatin ice cubes ahead is so that they don’t water down my smoothie. Also, if you just pour the gelatin right into the smoothie, it tastes grainy and can also make the smoothie turn “fluffy” and have a kind of strange texture. Plus, making them ahead, makes mornings a breeze!

Spike your smoothies with gelatin for added protein! Plus, gelatin helps strengthen hair, nails, joints, and cartilage.
Ingredients
1 cup cold water
2 Tbs. high quality gelatin (here's the brand I use and recommend)
1 cup boiling water
Instructions
In teapot or microwave, set water to boil.
Meanwhile, add gelatin to cold water. Let bloom for 1 minute, or until the gelatin no longer looks granulated.
Pour boiling water over the bloomed gelatin mixture and stir until the gelatin has completely dissolved.
Let cool.
Pour into ice cube trays and freeze.
Notes
Sometimes the gelatin ice cubes can resist coming out of the tray. To keep this from happening, do not overfill ice cube trays.
