Seared steak with creamy sriracha dipping sauce

A few days ago, I spent the afternoon experimenting with fresh organic foods and various Asian flavors hoping to develop a recipe that, in no uncertain terms, was like a high five to your taste buds.  Well, lace up your Air Jordan’s and prepare for a full on hand slap that’s about to occur in 3..2..1.  Today I bring to you an appetizer recipe for adorable seared steak rolls with a creamy sriracha dipping sauce that is sure to tantalize your tastebuds.   

I’ll confess that this recipe is not something you’re going to ‘whip up’ after a long day of work. It’s sophisticated. It requires courting. You’ll have to invest in it. But if you do, I promise that the blood, sweat and tears that goes into this is worth every single delectable bite.   Below are the basic steps for making these steak rolls and creamy sriracha. Feel free to add your own special flair to the drama because it’s really is a flexible recipe for anyone who feels comfortable pairing these types of ingredients.

As you already know, I find inspiration in seasonal ingredients. During the summer months, whatever I cannot get from my garden I will usually purchase from the local farmers market. It’s food sourced from my area and about as fresh as you can get.

Once you’ve prepared your ingredients, mix them in a bowl to create the marinade that will flavor and tenderize your steak. It’s basically a wonderfully aromatic steak bath.

Tip: It’s much easier to slice the steak into strips if it has been in the freezer for 30min prior to cutting.

Once your steak is soaking in the marinade, go ahead and whip up my creamy sriracha sauce. Be sure to sample it along the way 😉

Next, prepare the ingredients that will be used as the stuffing for the steak rolls. These healthy organic ingredients will be stir fried and then nestled within the steak strips.

Once your stir fry is finished, add the vegetables to the steak strips by hand.  Use toothpicks to secure them in place.  Now, they are ready to be seared.

Steak Rolls with Creamy Sriracha Dipping Sauce

A deliciously healthy appetizer recipe for adorable steak rolls with a creamy sriracha dipping sauce. This sophisticated pairing of flavors is sure to impress.

Ingredients

  1. 1 lb Tri-Tip steak (I always recommend organic, pastured, or grass-fed steak)

The Steak Marinade

  1. 7 Tablespoons of soy sauce (gluten free)

  2. 1 Tbs of avocado oil (or other high heat oil such as safflower)

  3. ½ cup of chives, diced

  4. 1 inch fresh ginger, minced (no need to peel, just wash)

  5. 3 small cloves of garlic, minced

  6. 1½ cups chicken broth

  7. 4½ Tbs. orange soy sauce (yeah, they make that, and it's gluten free! Click here for link)

  8. Pepper (freshly ground)

Stir Fry Ingredients

  1. 2 tsp oyster sauce

  2. 2 Tbs orange soy sauce

  3. 2 inches fresh ginger, peeled and minced

  4. 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, crushed (crush using a mortar and pestle)

  5. 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil

  6. 1½ tablespoons of soy sauce (gluten free)

  7. 4 Shitaki mushrooms cut for length

  8. ½ small red pepper, cut into matchsticks

  9. 1 carrot, cut into matchsticks, about 6" long

  10. 8 green onions, cut to 6" in length, with white parts split into quarters

  11. 1 head bok choy, cut into 6" long matchsticks

  1. Creamy Sriracha Dipping Sauce (Learn how to make my Creamy Sriracha Sauce, here)

Instructions

  1. Put your steak in the freezer and set a timer for 30min. This will make cutting it into thin slices really easy.

  2. (This is a great time to sharpen your knife, so that you can get thin, uniform slices.)

  3. Add the marinade ingredients to a bowl and stir until all of the ingredients are mixed to your satisfaction.

  4. After 30 minutes in the freezer, slice your steak into long thin slices.

  5. Place steak strips in marinade making sure that they are fully immersed. Put in fridge and let the spices socialize with the steak for a minimum of one hour.

Make the Creamy Sriracha Dipping Sauce.

Prepare your stir fry ingredients.

  1. Heat up a stir fry pan to a high heat with 2 tablespoons of avocado oil (or other high heat oil such as lard, safflower, sunflower).

  2. Add stir fry ingredients and mix vigorously for two minutes. Remove contents into separate bowl.

Putting it all together

  1. Divide your ingredients equally and place on the center of your steak strips.

  2. Roll the strip over the ingredients so that it is similar to a hay roll. Secure with toothpick.

  3. Place a stainless steel or cast iron skillet over medium heat.

  4. Add 1-2 Tbs. avocado oil to the pan, and let heat until the oil shimmers and will spread easily over the pan.

  5. Once hot enough, use tongs to place the steak rolls on the pan. Let sear on both sides for 60-90 seconds, or until steak easily releases from the pan (tip: meat will stick to a stainless steel or cast iron skillet until it is "done". When you can easily remove the meat from the pan, it's done cooking).

  6. Sprinkle sesame seeds over steak rolls and plate.

  7. Drizzle the creamy sriracha sauce over the steak rolls or use as a dip.

  8. eat. sigh with pleasure. smile. be thankful.

Notes

Love the sounds of it but don't have the time? Here's a way to dramatically reduce the time spent, and turn it into the perfect Monday night meal! Simply freeze and slice the steak and make the marinade and sriracha dipping sauce the night before. Pop the steak into the marinade in the morning before heading off to work. That night, slice the stir fry ingredients and simply stir fry the veggies and the meat together, drizzle with the sriracha sauce and serve over rice.That's delicious too!
